Physical therapists are healthcare professionals who are experts in movement. They help improve quality of life through prescribed exercise, hands-on care, and patient education. Physical therapists diagnose and treat individuals of all ages, from newborns to people at the end of life. Many patients have injuries, disabilities, or other health conditions that need treatment. But PTs also care for people who simply want to become healthier and to prevent future problems. Physical therapists can have a profound effect on people’s lives. They help people achieve fitness goals, regain or maintain their independence, and lead active lives.

Physical Therapy Q&A

What is Physical Therapy?

Physical Therapy is the treatment of disease, injury, or deformity by physical methods such as massage, heat treatment, and exercise rather than by drugs or surgery.

The goal of Physical Therapy is to examine each person and then develop a treatment plan to improve their ability to move, reduce or manage pain, restore function, and prevent disability.

Why do I need Physical Therapy?

Physical Therapy is a great conservative treatment option to reduce or eliminate pain, improve mobility, recover from or prevent an injury, improve balance, prevent falls and manage age-related issues.

How does Physical Therapy work?

Your first visit will be an initial evaluation with Dr. Cole where she will examine your condition and do tests and measures to get baseline values. Then, Dr. Cole will develop a treatment plan to address your condition and to meet your personal goals which may include: improving your mobility, reducing your pain, restoring your function, preventing injury etc. Dr. Cole may recommend that you attend Physical Therapy sessions once or twice per week for a certain number of weeks depending on your condition. The treatments may include manual therapy techniques, hot and cold therapy, electrical stimulation, various exercise strategies and patient education. After seeing you for several weeks, Dr. Cole will then reassess your condition using the same tests and measures performed at your initial evaluation to measure your progress.

What can I expect during Physical Therapy?

The Physical Therapy initial evaluation usually lasts for 30 minutes to 1 hour. The follow-up sessions typically last for 1 hour.

Dr. Cole performs Physical Therapy treatments in an outpatient setting. She also usually prescribes home exercises for you to perform at home to allow for steady progression towards functional goals.
